India Leads In Tourism Recovery Post-Covid

A recent report has indicated that India played a pivotal role in the post-pandemic recovery of tourism expenditure in Asia in 2022, following the fluctuations caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Notably, Tier-II and III cities like Varanasi, Coimbatore, and Kochi have been gaining popularity as top tourist destinations.

In 2022, India achieved a remarkable recovery by reaching 78 percent of its 2019 tourism expenditure levels, whereas the broader Asian market only recorded a 52 percent recovery. This data comes from a report titled ‘How India Travels,’ a collaboration between online travel platform Booking.com and McKinsey & Company.

Due to prolonged travel restrictions, particularly in countries like China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, the tourism industry in Asia remained subdued throughout 2022.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian travelers spent a substantial USD 150 billion on travel, ranking India as the sixth largest global spender. The report predicts that by 2030, total expenditure by Indian travelers will surge to $410 billion, making India the fourth largest global spender and showcasing one of the most rapid recoveries from COVID-19 globally in comparison to key regions. This expected robust recovery in India can be attributed to a strong economy, a growing middle class, and a youthful population with a penchant for travel, all of which are contributing to increased tourism revenue in the country.

Santosh Kumar, the Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com, mentioned that Indian travelers are enthusiastic, eager, and confident to explore both nearby and far-off destinations in search of new experiences. The report also predicts that Indians are anticipated to spend $40 billion by 2030, further driving the global tourism rebound.

The report underlines a surge in demand for alternative accommodation options, including hostels, campsites, vacation rentals, and chalets. The growth rate of average daily rates (ADR) for these alternative accommodations has outpaced those of traditional hotels and managed chains, signaling a notable shift in travel preferences among Indian travelers.

Tips to avoid viral and bacterial infections in public transport

01/10Millions commute to workplaces using public transport mode

Public transportation is an essential part of urban life, providing convenience and accessibility for millions of people worldwide. However, it gets risky to travel in one as it is also a breeding ground for germs and infections, especially in densely populated areas. As we continue to navigate the challenges posed by infectious diseases, it's crucial to take precautions when using public transport services. Let’s discuss different ways you can keep yourself free from infections while taking public transport services.

02/10Wear a mask everytime you step in a crowded bus or metro
Wearing a mask is one of the most effective ways to reduce the transmission of respiratory infections. It helps contain your respiratory droplets and protects you from inhaling potentially contaminated air. Make sure your mask covers your nose and mouth securely and replace it if it becomes damp or soiled during your journey.
03/10Maintain physical distancing

When possible, maintain a safe distance from other passengers. Many public transport systems have designated seating arrangements or floor markers to help with this. Staying at least six feet away from others can significantly reduce the risk of airborne transmission.

04/10Use hand sanitizer
Carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer and use it frequently. Apply sanitizer to your hands after touching surfaces like handrails, door handles, or ticket machines. Make it a habit to sanitize your hands before touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

05/10Avoid touching your face or mouth
Touching your face with unwashed hands is a common way to introduce germs into your body. Be mindful of this habit, and resist the urge to touch your face during your journey. If you need to scratch an itch or adjust your mask, use a tissue or the inside of your elbow.

From diet to sleep, reverse aging secrets of the man who says his biological age is 26

06/10Avoid eating or drinking in bus or metro
While it's tempting to grab a snack or a drink during your commute, doing so can increase your chances of infection. Eating or drinking in a confined space like public transportation might require removing your mask, exposing you to potential risks. It's best to wait until you've reached your destination.

07/10Opt for contactless payment
Whenever possible, opt for contactless payment methods such as mobile apps or prepaid cards. This minimizes the need to handle cash, tickets, or touch payment terminals, which can harbor germs.

08/10Wear gloves
If you're particularly concerned about contact with surfaces, you can consider using disposable gloves. However, be cautious with their use, as improperly removing gloves can also lead to contamination. Dispose of them properly after use and sanitize your hands immediately.

09/10Clean your personal belongings
Regularly clean and disinfect items you bring with you on public transportation, such as your phone, wallet, or bag. These items can pick up germs from surfaces and contribute to the risk of infection.

10/10Do not travel in bus or metro if you are not well
If you're feeling unwell, experiencing symptoms of illness, or have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for a contagious disease, it's best to avoid using public transport altogether. Stay home, seek medical advice, and consider alternative transportation options if necessary.

India became the first nation to surpass pre-pandemic levels of travel to Australia

According to Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, people are the living bridge between the two nations, and India is the first to return to and surpass pre-pandemic levels of travel to Australia. According to him, the number of direct flights between the two nations has virtually quadrupled.“People are the living bridge between Australia and India. Australian PM @AlboMP was one of 100,000 Australians to visit India this past year, double the number before COVID-19. India is the first country to return to (and beat) pre-pandemic levels of travel to Australia. Direct flights have nearly tripled! #dosti,” the Australian High Commissioner tweeted on Monday.

Earlier, the Australian envoy on the Hindi Diwas posted a video on ‘X’, stating, “Hindi is popular not only in Australia but also among our diplomats based in Delhi. Today, on the occasion of #HindiDiwas, our diplomats are sharing with you their favorite Hindi proverbs that inspire them.“
Responding to his message, PM Modi took to his social media platform ‘X’ and said, “These couplets and idioms of yours are mesmerizing! This attachment of Australian diplomats towards Hindi is very interesting.”

“I start as Australia’s 22nd High Commissioner to #India. I am looking forward to advancing ties – as PM @narendramodi has said, these are based on mutual trust & respect. #dosti@SenatorWong,” he captioned the video posted on X, formerly Twitter.
According to the Australian High Commissioner to India, approximately a million individuals of Indian descent now reside in Australia, forming a “vital” and expanding connection between our two great countries.

“This is a relationship brimming with opportunity from the security sphere where Australia and India have new levels of alignment of interest to the economic opportunity with the vibrancy of the Indian economy and the great underlying endowments of Australia present a perfect match and the human bridge,” he added.
“Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Albanese have given me a very clear signal. We want to grow this relationship as far and as fast as we can. That is my objective,” Green said.

Paris to allow swimming in the Seine River after 100 years!

Good news from Paris! Those who have been missing swimming in the famous Seine River can do so now the government of France has allowed swimming in the river nearly after a century! Yes. you read that correctly. The city had banned swimming in the River Seine nearly 100 years ago because of the dirty water.

But now, the beautiful French city, Paris is in its final stage of a historic river clean-up. So very soon, the river will have swimmers and divers back. All thanks to the Olympics which are all set to be held in Paris in 2024 summers. Seine River will see three Olympic and Paralympic events, namely triathlon, marathon swimming and Para-triathlon.

Pierre Rabadan, deputy Paris mayor in charge of the Olympics, said, "When people see athletes swimming in the Seine with no health problems, they'll be confident themselves to start going back in the Seine. It's our contribution for the future."

Paris experienced its river quality going bad because of industrial waste and a booming population. This also affected aquatic life badly. The condition got so bad that in the 1960s only three species of fish were recorded in Paris.

The ban on swimming in Seine came into effect in 1923. But in the last 20 years, the river has been experiencing improvements in terms of stopping bacterias to entering the river. But the problem was different. Samuel Colin-Canivez, chief engineer for sanitation at Paris city hall explained, "But the difficulty has been in eradicating those last few percentage points to ensure it can be officially classified as clean."

But when the work is done, mayor Anne Hidalgo said that three spots on the Seine will be open for public bathing from summer 2025.

Malaysia offers longer visa-free time to Hong Kong passport-holders

Malaysia agrees to extend the period Hong Kong passport-holders can stay in the Southeast Asian nation to 90 days from 30 without a visa. Hong Kongers are set to get longer visa-free stays in Malaysia, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter, as the city’s leader seeks to forge closer ties with its Southeast Asian neighbours.

Malaysia agreed to extend the period Hong Kong passport-holders can stay in the Southeast Asian nation to 90 days from 30 without a visa, said people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to speak freely. An announcement could come as soon as Thursday, one of the people said.

The Hong Kong government reached out to the Malaysian government and lodged the request, two of the people said. The city’s Chief Executive John Lee is expected to arrive in the Southeast Asian nation on Thursday as part of a week-long tour of the region.

The move would represent a reciprocation of the 90-day visa free travel that Malaysians currently enjoy to the Asian financial hub. The Malaysian Home Ministry didn’t respond to multiple calls from Bloomberg News, while a representative from the Hong Kong government didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Lee is in Southeast Asia to drum up investment opportunities for the international financial hub. He is also seeking to garner support for the city’s bid to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which was formed under China’s leadership.

Malaysia’s move to grant Hong Kong the visa-free extension would be an easy win for Lee to show he’s forging closer ties with Southeast Asia.

Hong Kong has been working to shore up the city’s international financial center as concerns mount in Western capitals over the erosion of civil liberties following the enactment of a Beijing-imposed national security law in 2020. The former British colony has shifted to building ties with Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian countries, which haven’t publicly criticized Hong Kong about jailing pro-democracy activists and groups.

Lee is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia on Thursday, after visiting Indonesia and Singapore, where he signed memorandums of understanding on topics including trade and financial services. In February, the Hong Kong leader visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where similar pacts were signed.

Women’s Participation in Travel & Tourism Critical to Growth of Global Sector

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reiterated the importance of women’s engagement in Travel & Tourism to catapult its growth and achieve a thriving and resilient sector at the Women Deliver Global Conference, in Kigali, Rwanda.

Speaking at the conference today, Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, emphasised the importance of promoting women’s involvement in the sector and overcoming challenges for success in the business world.

The event served as a platform to address the challenges faced by women in the Travel & Tourism sector and explore strategies to overcome them, aiming to inspire change and promote equal opportunities for women in the sector.

The panel discussions shed light on the challenges faced by women in various aspects of the business, including barriers to entry, operational obstacles, and ecosystem limitations.

The event underscored the vital role of mentorship in empowering young women and girls in business. Through networking, opportunities, and resources, mentorship programs unlock their potential for economic transformation.

During her address, Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “It is proven that companies that have 50% women in their leadership make more money. This makes even more sense in travel and tourism where women make the buying decisions on where to go on holiday.

‘It also makes good sense to employ women in senior roles; why would you exclude access to 50% of global talent.

“Rwanda has a great track record with a majority of women MPs in the Parliament. President Kagame addressed the Women Deliver, for the first time held in Africa, with real passion and a track record of gender equality.

“Putting women centre stage in Travel & Tourism will ensure a better future for the sector and the global economy. Currently, more than half of the sector is made up of women.

“By addressing the barriers and inequalities they face, we can unlock immense potential and drive sustainable growth.

“The ‘Women Deliver’ event serves as a catalyst for change, bringing together sector leaders, policymakers, and advocates to work collectively towards a more diverse and prosperous future.”

According to the global tourism body, women constitute approximately 54% of the workforce. Travel & Tourism provides accessible opportunities for women, but it also faces disparities such as lower pay and job security.

These disparities were reflected in the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact, where a majority of the 62 million jobs lost in the travel and tourism sector were women’s jobs.

WTTC urges both the public and private sectors to play their part in promoting women’s participation in the Travel & Tourism sector. It says governments should adopt policies that promote women in senior management, such as mandatory quotas for publicly listed companies and state-owned enterprises.

The private sector should offer targeted professional development programs for women and create networking and mentoring opportunities.

WTTC remains committed to advocating for gender equality, working closely with its members, governments, and industry partners to foster an environment where women have equal opportunities to excel, lead, and shape the future of the travel and tourism sector.
